Brooklyn Academy of Music to review films by Shahram Mokri

Movies made by Iranian acclaimed filmmaker Shahram Mokri have been scheduled to be reviewed during a special program at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in the US.

The screening program, which will begin on February 25, will host Mokri as a guest to follow up with the question and answer sessions. 

Mokri’s latest award-winning 134-minute ‘Careless Crime’, which won the Premio Bisato d’Oro for Best Original Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, is one of the films selected to be screened during the weeklong program.

Inspired by a real-life tragedy, the infamous Cinema Rex fire in 1978, ‘Careless Crime’ has been called by the academy as “a mysterious puzzle box, equal parts Abbas Kiarostami and Chris Marker.”

'Fish & Cat’ and ‘Ashkan, the Charmed Ring and Other Stories’ are other films made by Mokri that are also up for a review.

‘Fish & Cat’ is a mystery drama filmed in single-take. It made an international splash after scooping the 2013 Venice fest’s special prize for innovative content firmly establishing Mokri’s rep as a distinctive talent.

Mokri’s first feature ‘Ashkan, the Charmed Ring and Other Stories’ is a black-and-white comedy.

The flick is about “interconnected strangers and the mysterious workings of fate, played out in deadpan Jim Jarmusch-like vignettes,” writes the academy describing the movie.  

The program will also feature Mokri’s third film ‘Invasion’.  

“The time-bending, single-shot experiment and hybrid science fiction-detective-vampire story is set in a future dystopia, with nods to stylized 1980s New Wave-era films like “Liquid Sky”,” notes the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

In its announcement for the film, the Brooklyn Academy of Music has said, “Watch for sly references to film noir classics in this eccentric Iranian gem.”

Founded in 1861, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a performing arts venue in Brooklyn, New York City, known as a center for progressive and avant-garde performance.

The program will run until March 03, 2022.
